MAY 2007 -- CertainTeed recently issued an announcement clarifying that the vast majority of CertainTeeds asphalt shingle products conform to the latest code requirements of the ICCs International Residential Codes (IRC 2000, IRC 2003, and IRC 2006) and the International Building Codes (IBC 2000, IBC 2003, IBC 2006) in all wind zones when properly applied.
This table, part of CertainTeed Technical Information Sheet #250, lists CertainTeeds shingles approved for use in wind zones of 110 MPH and greater. No additional fasteners are required for standard application in any wind zone area. In addition, the vast majority of CertainTeed shingles conform to ASTM D7158 Class H requirements, which indicates that those shingles are classified for use in basic wind zones up to and including 150 MPH.
In considering asphalt shingles and wind performance, it is important to separate code acceptable wind speed ratings, which are legal regulations designed for the purposes of ensuring quality construction and occupant safety, from wind speed warranties, which are product features. In making this distinction, CertainTeed intentionally designs for wind resistance performance on its products that well exceed the warranties offered to the market. This over-engineering of the shingles serves to protect the consumer by ensuring high performing products that are not prone to failure even in cases when environmental conditions may exceed the warranty limits.
